Look, I've been watching this mess unfold from my little
shop by the beach, and I gotta tell you - this whole
information war thing? It's just creating noise. Pure noise.
After fixing broken surfboards all day with barely a
customer in sight, I spend too much time scrolling through
this digital chaos, and I'm tired of it.

You've got these alt-right extremists flooding everything
with their garbage, and what do we do? Try to fight fire
with fire. But here's the thing - when everyone's screaming,
nobody's heard. It's like trying to out-yell a storm. I see
it every day: one side posts something inflammatory, the
other side responds with twice the volume, and suddenly my
feed is just an endless shouting match. The algorithms eat
it up like candy, pushing the most outrageous stuff to the
top. It's exhausting, and worse, it's making us all numb to
actual problems that need solving.

Remember when we had that spam call epidemic? Man, that was
a nightmare. But we didn't fix it by spam-calling the
spammers back. We got smart about it. We built walls. We got
caller ID. We got those "Potential Spam" warnings. The phone
companies finally stepped up and gave us real tools to fight
back. Now when I get a call at the shop, I know exactly
who's on the other end before I pick up. Simple tools that
actually worked, because they put the power in our hands.

That's what we need for social media. Not this algorithmic
circus we're stuck with. Give me the power to filter my own
feed, dammit. I want to block specific keywords that I know
are just rage bait. Let me use AI to spot patterns of BS
that keep showing up. And for heaven's sake, just let me see
posts from people I actually want to hear from - in the
order they posted them. Is that really so hard? The
technology exists. Hell, we had better content control on
old-school forums twenty years ago.

And hey, if these tech bros won't give us the tools we need?
Walk away. Hit 'em where it hurts. Remember how users
invented the hashtag, not Twitter? That's because real
solutions come from the people actually using these
platforms. We figured out ways to organize information
ourselves because the platforms wouldn't do it for us.
Imagine what we could do if they actually listened to us
instead of their advertisers.

Want another solution? Make these platforms talk to each
other. It's ridiculous that I can spot a known troublemaker
on Facebook, but they get to start fresh on Instagram or
wherever else. Email figured this out decades ago - I can
send messages between Gmail and Yahoo and whatever else
because they agreed on basic standards. Why can't social
media do the same? If someone's spreading hate and
misinformation, that reputation should follow them.

And for God's sake, stop treating paid ads like they're
sacred. Just because someone's got cash doesn't mean they
get to spew whatever they want. I run a small business - I
get the importance of advertising. But when I put an ad in
the local paper, they have standards about what I can say.
Social media companies need to step up and take
responsibility for what they're amplifying. Give us real
control over what ads we see, make it dead simple to block
them, and let us share or filter them as we please. The
tools they give us now are like trying to fix a surfboard
with scotch tape - technically possible, but missing the
point entirely.

I've watched plenty of trends come and go in this beach town
over the years. Seen how the internet went from this amazing
tool that connected us all to this monster that's tearing us
apart. But sitting here in my shop, watching the waves roll
in day after day, I've learned something: nature finds
balance. Right now, our online world is way out of balance
because we've let the noise-makers take control.

The solution isn't more noise. It's better filters, better
tools, and putting the power back in our hands. We need to
demand better from these platforms, or build better ones
ourselves. Because right now? We're all just drowning in a
sea of noise, and I'm not sure how much longer we can keep
our heads above water.

But what do I know? I just fix things for a living. Maybe
it's time we fixed this too.
