Our brains are wired to find them everywhere—in clouds, in coincidences, and especially in chaos. This instinct has kept our species alive for thousands of years. But sometimes, a pattern isn't really there. Sometimes, chaos is just chaos. And sometimes, the most dangerous conspiracy theory isn't the one that blames too much on human malice; it's the one that gives those supposed conspirators far too much credit. Consider any major world event—a political assassination, an economic collapse, a pandemic's early spread, or a terrorist attack. When something significant happens, especially something tragic or unexpected, we naturally want it to make sense. Our brains find randomness unsatisfying. Surely, we think, something this significant must have been planned. It must have been orchestrated. Someone must have had a grand design. But this line of thinking contains a fundamental flaw, one that most conspiracy theories never adequately address: they often require their villains to be simultaneously brilliant masterminds and profound incompetents. Let's call this the Competence Paradox. Understanding it might help us all think more clearly about the complex world around us. PART ONE: WHY WE SEEK PATTERNS Before we can understand the Competence Paradox, we need to understand why we're drawn to conspiracy theories in the first place. The answer isn't that we're foolish or gullible. It's that our brains are literally designed to find patterns and make connections. This is an evolutionary advantage. A prehistoric human who could connect the pattern of rustling grass to the presence of a predator lived longer than one who saw grass rustling and felt no alarm. A person who noticed that certain plants made people sick had a better chance of survival than someone who experienced the same poisoning but didn't connect the dots. Pattern recognition kept our ancestors alive. In the modern world, this same instinct manifests differently. Each time we connect disparate pieces of information and feel that satisfying "aha!" moment, our brains reward us with a small hit of dopamine. We become pattern-seeking machines, constantly looking for connections. When you solve a puzzle, your brain celebrates. When you find an explanation that makes sense of chaos, it celebrates again. The problem is that this reward system doesn't distinguish between real patterns and false ones. Your brain feels just as satisfied finding a meaningful connection between two random events as it does finding a genuine causal relationship. The feeling of understanding is identical whether what you've understood is true or not. PART TWO: THE ALLURE OF ORDER OVER CHAOS There's another psychological component at play: we find randomness deeply unsatisfying and frightening. We overestimate our ability to understand the past and predict the future, believing the world is more ordered and predictable than it actually is. A world of pure randomness feels unmanageable—it feels like a world where we have no control. A conspiracy theory provides order. If someone is controlling events, then events are controllable. There's a logic to it, even if the logic is paranoid. If we can identify the conspirators, we can theoretically stop them. There is agency somewhere in the system, and therefore hope that the situation can be changed or at least understood. A world where major events happen largely by accident, where incompetence plays a starring role, and where random chance determines outcomes? That world feels scarier. It's harder to process. It offers less comfort. This is why conspiracy theories often persist even in the face of contrary evidence. The conspiracy provides psychological comfort in the form of order and controllability, which is more important to many people than accuracy. PART THREE: THE COMPETENCE PROBLEM Now we arrive at the central issue: most elaborate conspiracy theories require an impossible level of sustained competence. Consider what they require. Vast networks of people must keep perfect secrets. A conspiracy involving dozens, hundreds, or thousands of people must go completely undiscovered. No whistleblowers. No accidentally leaked emails. No deathbed confessions. No one, across years or decades, deciding their conscience is more important than the cause. Execution must be flawless. Complex plans involving multiple independent moving parts must work perfectly. Every contingency must be anticipated. Every variable must be controlled. No mistakes. No miscommunications. No one misunderstanding their orders or choosing to do something slightly different. They must anticipate every possible variable. The conspirators must be smarter than everyone else, able to foresee consequences that others cannot. They must account for unexpected reactions from the public, from independent actors, from other institutions that weren't part of the plan. Yet, remarkably, according to these same theories, these brilliant, secretive, flawlessly executing conspirators apparently cannot do basic things. They can't keep simple secrets. If they can orchestrate a massive global conspiracy involving thousands of people, why does every other secret at a similar level of government or corporate operations leak within months? They can't execute basic plans. The Department of Defense struggles with software projects. NASA missions have equipment failures. Private companies launch products that don't work. Yet somehow the conspirators have zero failures? They can't coordinate small teams. A simple office surprise party requires multiple people to keep a secret for a week, and someone usually leaks it by day four. But the conspiracy, with vastly more complexity and higher stakes, never has coordination issues? They can't cover basic tracks. We see evidence of basic incompetence constantly: emails to the wrong people, passwords on sticky notes, security protocols bypassed. Yet the conspiracy maintains perfect operational security. PART FOUR: THE POWER OF RANDOMNESS The reality is that most major historical events are the result of a complex tangle of independent actions, unforeseen consequences, and random chance. Sometimes the random chance dominates so thoroughly that it's almost absurd. Consider the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which triggered World War I and reshaped the entire 20th century. A motorcade took a wrong turn down a narrow street in Sarajevo. The wrong turn placed his vehicle directly in front of Gavrilo Princip, an assassin having a snack at a nearby café after his initial attempt had failed. Princip, who had already given up on the assassination and was contemplating failure while eating, suddenly found his target directly in front of him. He managed to gather himself, draw his weapon, and fire the fatal shots. World War I—and therefore the Russian Revolution, the rise of Hitler, the Holocaust, and the entire structure of the modern world—hinged on an assassin taking a break to eat and a driver making a navigation error. This isn't a narrative of grand design. This is randomness with world-altering consequences. This is how the world actually works. Most significant outcomes are the result of multiple independent actions, unforeseen consequences, random luck, systemic issues no single person fully controls, human error, and simple incompetence at crucial moments. PART FIVE: THE STATISTICAL IMPOSSIBILITY Let's apply basic statistics to the idea of large-scale conspiracies maintaining perfect secrecy. Suppose you have 100 people in a conspiracy—each perfectly loyal and willing to keep the secret forever. But humans occasionally slip up. Maybe they get drunk and say something. Maybe they feel guilty. Maybe they're angry and decide to talk. If we assume each person has just a 5% chance per decade of accidentally revealing the conspiracy, then with 100 people across 50 years, the probability that no one reveals anything is essentially zero—approximately 0.0000000073%. This is with incredibly conservative assumptions. Real conspiracies would be far larger, people would slip up far more often, and conspiracies would need to be maintained for decades or centuries. The mathematics simply doesn't work. PART SIX: A BETTER WAY TO THINK If conspiracy theories are usually wrong because they credit their villains with impossible competence, how should we think about complex events and suspicious coincidences? Ask what systems and incentives led to this outcome. Organizations have structures, cultures, and financial incentives that shape behavior. Harmful outcomes sometimes emerge not from deliberate planning but from these systemic forces. Consider what random factors contributed. Historical contingency matters enormously. Which unlikely chain of events led to this outcome? Understanding the role of chance can help us identify which systems are fragile and need protection. Apply Occam's Razor: the explanation requiring the fewest assumptions is usually correct. A grand conspiracy across decades requires far more assumptions than the explanation that various actors made decisions based on incentives, outcomes were shaped by random events, and sometimes incompetence played a starring role. Most importantly, ask whether you're giving too much credit to human competence. Before you blame a conspiracy, ask: would you trust these same people to coordinate a complex project at work? Would you trust a government agency to execute a flawless secret plan? Most wouldn't, yet we imagine the same people pulling off perfectly orchestrated operations. CONCLUSION The world is messy, chaotic, and often random. Sometimes the scariest truth isn't that someone is controlling everything—it's that no one is. Major events often result from an accumulation of independent decisions, accidents, and chance occurrences. Sometimes incompetence genuinely reigns. Sometimes the villain is less a mastermind and more a person making decisions that seemed reasonable at the time, whose consequences became far more significant than anyone anticipated. This doesn't mean there are no real conspiracies. There are. But real conspiracies tend to be smaller, shorter-lived, and less perfectly orchestrated than grand theories imagine. They tend to fail. People involved tend to slip up. Evidence tends to emerge. Before you settle on a conspiracy theory as an explanation for a major event, ask yourself: Am I giving these conspirators too much credit? Would the people I know be capable of pulling off what I'm imagining? Would a real human organization, with all their flaws and limitations, really be able to execute this plan perfectly? The answer is almost certainly no.
